Cannabis Infused Coconut Oil

For me, cooking is like therapy and makes me feel really good, particularly when it’s with cannabis. I’ll be the first to admit that I have a love affair with both food and cannabis. So much so, that I started a local Facebook group called “High Level Cooking.” With HLC, I set out to share various techniques and recipes with products that I personally use from my local medical cannabis dispensaries (MMTCs), while educating newcomers on the importance of medicating responsibly.

How to make cannabis infused coconut oil

For this demonstration, I’ll be using 800mg of hybrid distillate from my friends over at Curaleaf Florida. Their hybrid distillate is a mixture of the famous sativa dominant strain, “Sour Diesel," and the popular indica strain, “Master Kush." Vaping this distillate will give you a very balanced cerebral buzz mixed with a smooth body buzz. It does lend more of it’s sativa qualities when used for vaping, in my opinion. I highly recommend this distillate, especially for those like me that have a ton of ideas and creative stuff zipping around in your head. It also helps to ease my back spasms without sacrificing mental clarity. Being able to focus on a task and not on my pain has greatly improved my productivity.

However, using it in an edible form is totally different. When using this hybrid distillate in foods, the effects are absolutely amazing. It acts more like a 50/50 hybrid. No pronounced drowsy effects here, just a very even head/body buzz with a slightly more indica feel. All right then, enough of the mumbo jumbo. Let’s get to work…

Total Time Needed: 30 minutes

Required Tools:

- Coffee mug with one inch water
- Fork
- Pastry spatula
- Medium saucepan
- Metal mixing bowl that fits on the saucepan like a double boiler
- Small food storage container

Ingredients Needed:

- 800mg Curaleaf distillate
- 1 cup good coconut oil

The Process:

Step 1: Fill the saucepan with water
Fill the saucepan with water so that the bottom of the metal bowl sits just above the surface of the water when sitting on the pan. Place the saucepan on the stove and set on medium low. You don’t want the water to boil, but rather to just start simmering.
Step 2: Add the coconut oil
Next, add 1 cup of coconut oil to the metal bowl. Keep stirring until the oil is clear and fully melted. While the oil is heating up, fill a coffee mug with an inch or so of water and put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. After the microwave has shut off, place the mug on counter for a minute before the next step.
Step 3: Warm the distillate
With the cap still on the syringe(s) of distillate, place it cap side down in the hot mug of water, let it sit for a minute or two. This helps to loosen up the distillate for easier dispensing.
Step 4: Add the distillate
By now the oil is warm enough for infusion. Remove the syringe from the mug and remove the cap. Squeeze the entire contents of the syringe into the warm coconut oil. With your fork, gently start to mix the distillate around until it’s fully incorporated. It’ll look like a translucent worm at first, and then it’ll just be as clear as the oil when fully mixed.
Step 5: Let it cool
Turn the stove off, remove the metal bowl from the pan, and try not to burn yourself on the steam. Let the oil sit a while to cool. Pour the cooled oil into a food storage container or recycled butter tub while using a silicone pastry spatula to get all the good stuff out. Put a lid on it and clearly mark as to what it is then toss it in the refrigerator until it has hardened.

Figuring out the dosage...

Figuring out the dosage is easy: One cup equals 48 teaspoons. So divide 800 (mg) into 48 (teaspoons) and you’ll get 16.666666. This tells you that for every teaspoon of infused coconut oil you use, you’ll be adding 16.67mg of THC to your recipe. Knowing your own endocannabinoid system and the potency of your infused mediums are the keys to responsible medicating. Start with low dosages like 5- 10mg and work your way up from there. It may take up to two hours to start feeling the effects of the cannabis when eating it, so take your time when first starting out. Have fun with it though, who said medicating had to be bad tasting and mundane?

At this point, the possibilities are endless as to what you can do with your new coconut oil brew! Get creative add add it to your everyday meals when you want to medicate.

Infused Wicked Hippie Coolwhip

It’s that time again in Southwest Florida when the humidity and daily rainstorms have subsided. Along with all that moisture disappearing with the onset of fall, your body also dries out much more quickly. I don’t know about any of you, but my hands and feet take the brunt of the seasonal humidity change. So
